The Serpent is based on the true story of the capture of Charles Sobhraj, a con man and murderer who preyed on young tourists along the “Hippie Trail” in Asia in 1975 and 76. The miniseries, originally produced by the BBC, cuts between the crimes of Sobhraj and the efforts of Dutch ambassador Herman Knippenberg to capture him. The Serpent stars Tahar Rahim as Sobhraj, Jenna Coleman as his girlfriend Marie-Andrée Leclerc, Billy Howle as Herman Knippenberg, and Ellie Bamber as his wife Angela. The series was well received in the UK. You can see the Netflix trailer here.
